The Program

The Family Medicine Residency Program began in July 1, 2012, obtaining its maximum accreditation by the accrediting agency American Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

The Program consists of three years of training in the specialty of Family Medicine and with an enrollment of six (6) residents per level.

The Family Medicine Residency Program has a group of attendings who provide support and education to residents. Our residents will have an important exposure in the different stages of patient care such as: Medicine for children, adolescents, adults and the elderly. It is a program that requires scientific research during the three years where we will offer you the necessary tools to achieve these goals.

Mission Statement

The Mayaguez Medical Center Family Medicine Residency Training Program will provide high-quality, cost-effective medical education and health care services. Graduates will have the appropriate knowledge, attitudes and skill to deliver comprehensive family health care. We want to serve as model of comprehensive family oriented primary care in an academic environment training Residents in the art and science of Family Medicine.

To have as a basic concept the strategies of competitive academic teaching.

  1.  Use as a teaching place the Family Medicine Center for out-patient patients.
  2. Integrate technology in the medical area.
  3. Provide a high-quality service to all patients.
  4. Provide and offer necessary tools to accomplish scientific research requirements during the three years of training.
  5. Offer a resident learning environment that promotes wellness and resilience, and reduces burnout, to sustain meaning in the professional and personal lives of residents during residency and throughout their careers, creating a learning environment that promotes wellness through proper self-care, and meaning in work.
  6. Prepare residents for any practice environment, whether fellowship, academic medicine, or private practice, and recruit, retain, and engage a diverse workforce aimed at promoting graduating residents to become part of our academic program.
